India is a very peculiar country. On one side we have entered the elite space technology savvy nations' club of world, take pride in having developed its own rocket fuel technology and have the largest knowledge worker population in the world. On the other, we have the largest % of illiterate population in the world, have a large % of population surviving on primitive ways of farming and completely at the mercy of the natural elements. Many of these poor farmers have no access to the latest of technological knowledge and never will no what inter net means. They are many times driven to the extreme steps of taking their own lives due to mounting debts which they just can not hope to clear in their life-time! On the other side you have the likes of Ambanis who are one of the richest in the world and live in 43 storey high houses! What a country of contrasts indeed! Is it not possible to apply our techno savvy brains to these grass root level problems? We have an Agriculture Minister who spends more time in managing his duties as cricket club's chairman and advises farmers to give up cultivation and take up jobs in industries! We have a Prime Minister who is one of the leading economics scholars of the world but is reduced to a mere puppet in the hands of a woman who has never crossed the threshold of any college! Her son who is equally dis-illustrious is aspiring to man the top most post in this country some time based only because he carries a surname which rings respect in the minds of the poor & illiterate masses of this unfortunate nation! We have equally in efficient and callous finance and home ministers who look tired, are tired and should have gone home long time ago. We have a neighbor whose sole raison-de-etre of existence is to constantly be on a collusion path with India and keep harping on long dead issues having no relevance and logic. It also happens to be the leader of the most dreaded of international mafias and criminals/terrorists. Yet, our leaders swear by Gandhi's ideology of non-violence which alas, in today's politics is at the best a utopian concept and at the worst a stupid, foolish method of the weak and the meek! Is there no way out of this Catch 22 situation of this once upon a time great country in the words of Basham |
