The IPKF Memorial at Colombo reads:

"Valiant Were Their Deeds, Undying Be Their Memories".

Today, 31 Years after the raid at Jaffna University, the men of 13 SIKH LI, 10 Para Commando, 4/5 Gorkha Rifles, 65 Cavalry are all forgotten by the world .......... But not by  us.

The gallant Indian Braves of 13 Sikh Light Infantry and 10 Para Commando were heli-dropped into Jaffna University OnThisDay 12 Oct 1987.

Their task:

•Commandos were to capture LTTE leadership.
•13 SIKH LI was to hold and secure the landing zone.

the Sikh LI troops were led by Maj Birendra Singh, VirChakra (P) and the commandos were commanded by Maj (later Maj Gen) Sheonan Singh, VirChakra.

The heliborne component was led by Gp Capt VKN Sapre, VirChakra.

On the night of 11 Oct 1987, as the Indian Braves were preparing to launch from Palaly airfield for the assault at Jaffna University, the enemy intercepted radio transmission of the impending action.

The first component comprising of the commandos flew in over the Jaffna University football ground in 'black out' condition. The next waves came under fire from the LTTE, as they identified the drop zone ~~  The gallant Indian Braves had almost flown into a trap.

The Commandos spread out to carry out their mission objectives, as Indian Braves of 13 SIKH LI held their ground at the drop zone, despite the  heavy enemy fire.

All through the night and early morning they held out, till last man and last round.

None of them came back, not even in coffins.....

Our Salute to these Unsung  Martyrs !
