US has shifted to GPS- and laser-guided gravity bombs to conserve precision missile stocks

In the ongoing US-Iran war as of March 2026, the US has shifted to GPS- and laser-guided gravity bombs to conserve precision missile stocks after achieving air superiority over Iran.

These "dumb" bombs, retrofitted with Boeing's Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) kits, allow cheaper, high-volume strikes now that risks to aircraft are minimized.

Key CharacteristicsGravity bombs in use include 500lb, 1,000lb, and 2,000lb variants dropped by USAF fighters like F-15Es and bombers (B-1B, B-2, B-52) under Operation Epic Fury. The JDAM kit adds steerable fins and GPS/laser guidance for precision from closer ranges, contrasting initial standoff munitions like Tomahawks.

Pentagon officials, including Secretary Hegseth, describe stockpiles as "nearly unlimited," enabling intensified close-air support against Iranian missile sites, naval assets, and infrastructure.

Strategic RoleThis transition supports "stand-in precision strikes" over Iran, with evidence from CENTCOM photos showing F-15E loadouts of four JDAMs each. It follows destruction of ~200 Iranian air defenses, reducing the need for long-range weapons amid falling Iranian retaliation (missile fire down 86%, drones 73%)

. Israel coordinates similar tactics, amplifying effects on deeply buried targets like nuclear facilities.

The US shifted from cruise missiles to gravity bombs in the Iran war starting early March 2026 to conserve expensive precision-guided munitions (PGMs) after rapidly depleting stockpiles and achieving air dominance.

Stockpile DepletionInitial strikes consumed thousands of Tomahawks, JASSMs, and JDAMs (each costing $1-2 million), with over 1,700 targets hit in the first week exhausting pre-positioned reserves. Pentagon briefings confirmed JDAM shortages, prompting a pivot to "cheaper, abundant" gravity bombs (under $30,000 with kits) for sustained operations.

Air Superiority Achieved

Destruction of ~200 Iranian S-300/400 systems and radars allowed fighters (F-15E, F-16) and bombers (B-52s) to operate safely within 20km of targets, eliminating risks that mandated standoff cruise missiles earlier. Gravity bombs now enable precise, high-volume attacks on fixed sites like missile depots and naval bases.

Cost and Volume Benefits-Gravity bombs with JDAM kits offer similar accuracy (CEP <10m) at 1/50th the cost, supporting "unlimited" sorties amid Iran's faltering defenses (missile barrages down 86%). This sustains momentum without production lags, as noted by Defense Secretary Hegseth.
