Every Indian Must Participate to Win The Battle for Fuel and Energy Security

India’s Fuel and LPG Supplies are Secure; Do Not Believe in Rumors

Amidst current global geopolitical tensions, fears of a fuel shortage have spread among citizens. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri have assured the nation that India possesses sufficient stocks and the supply chain is completely secure.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a stern warning to those spreading rumors regarding LPG. He stated that certain individuals are purposefully creating fear about LPG supplies to seek personal profit. He assured that strict action will be taken against such people and emphasized that citizens will not be allowed to face any hardship.

Key Points from the Speech:

  •  When the whole country works together, even major crises can be overcome easily.
  • India is promoting various energy sources, strengthening infrastructure, and aiming for energy independence.
  • In 2014, there were 14 crore LPG connections; today, there are over 33 crore. Gas bottling capacity has also doubled.
  • The number of LNG terminals has doubled since 2014. Piped gas reach has increased from 25–26 lakh households to 1.25 crore households.
  • Indian Railways is now nearly 100% electrified (compared to 20% in 2014), saving 180 crore liters of fuel in 2024–25.

Strategic Diversification

Due to tensions between Iran, Israel, and the U.S., traffic through the Strait of Hormuz—which accounts for 20% of global oil/gas trade—has been disrupted. However, India has successfully managed the situation by diversifying imports.

  • Route Shift: Previously, 45% of India's crude oil came via Hormuz; now, 70% comes via alternative routes.
  • Broad Sourcing: India currently imports crude oil from 40 different countries.
  • No Shortage: There is no shortage of petrol, diesel, kerosene, ATF, or fuel oil.

Alternative LNG & LPG Production

  • Natural Gas: Domestic production stands at 90 MMSCMD. Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for homes and CNG for vehicles are running at 100% supply.
  • LPG Surge: About 60% of LPG is imported and 40% is produced domestically. In the last five days, domestic LPG production has been increased by 28%.
  • Delivery Standards: The government is maintaining a delivery period of approximately 2.5 days. To prevent hoarding, booking intervals have been set to 25 days for urban areas and 45 days for rural areas.

Surge in LPG Bookings, But Stocks are Ample

Panic caused by the war-like global situation has led to a massive spike in LPG bookings. Before the conflict, daily bookings averaged 55.7 lakh cylinders; that figure has now reached 75.7 lakh. This daily increase of nearly 20 lakh cylinders is purely due to "panic booking."

  • The Reality: The country’s 25,000 distributors have more than enough stock.
  • Supply Chain: Even though the "Strait of Hormuz" route is disrupted, India has secured alternative routes by increasing imports from countries like the USA, Canada, and Russia.
  • Production: Domestic LPG production has been ramped up by 28% over the last five days.

PNG, CNG, and Petrol-Diesel Supplies Remain Stable

  • Domestic Supply: Per the order dated March 9, 2026, the supply of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for homes and CNG for vehicles will continue without any cuts.
  • Petrol-Diesel: India boasts a refining capacity of 258 million metric tonnes, and all refineries are operating at 100% capacity. There is no shortage of petrol or diesel.
  • Coal Supply: Coal India has been directed to provide additional coal to industrial customers to ease the burden on other fuel sources.

Stern Warning to Rumour mongers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi clarified that certain elements are spreading fear regarding LPG for political gain or profiteering. Strict action will be taken against such individuals. He noted that from 14 crore gas connections in 2014, the number has crossed 33 crore today, proving that our infrastructure is robust.

Gas Running Out Quickly? Change Your Kitchen Habits

In some cities, the pressure on LPG is high, making gas conservation at home vital. By adopting the right habits, you can make your cylinder last much longer.

Common Reasons for Gas Wastage:

  1. Cooking without a lid: Heat escapes, taking more time and gas.
  2. Wrong burner size: Using a large burner for a small vessel wastes energy.
  3. Unsoaked grains: Cooking pulses or chickpeas directly on the stove doubles gas consumption.
  4. Dirty burners: Clogged holes lead to uneven flames and inefficient burning.
  5. Starting the stove too early: Keeping the gas on while still chopping vegetables or gathering spices.

Smart Habits for Saving Gas:

  • Preparation: Complete all chopping and measuring before lighting the stove.
  • Soaking: Soak rice and pulses for a few hours; they will cook much faster.
  • Use Pressure Cookers: They significantly reduce cooking time for most staples.
  • Simmering: Once the food reaches a boil, turn the heat to medium or low.
  • Maintenance: Regularly clean burners to ensure a steady blue flame.

National Duty and Collective Resolve

Every crisis is a mirror to society. In times of uncertainty, our conduct determines the severity of the situation.

Hoarding vs. Responsibility: When we hoard out of fear, we might be extinguishing the stove of a family in genuine need. It is the duty of every conscious citizen to refuse to pay inflated black-market prices and to act with restraint.

The Test of Character: In an era of viral rumors, staying calm is the ultimate test. We are not just consumers; we are the pillars of this nation. Fuel conservation is no longer just a household choice—it is a national duty.

Conclusion: "Conservation is Production"

By adopting these simple, disciplined habits, you can reduce your monthly expenses and contribute to national security. Let us reject rumors, refuse hoarding, and join this battle for fuel conservation as responsible citizens. Through collective effort, India will surely overcome this challenge.
