Seventeen-year-old badminton prodigy Tanvi Sharma etched her name in the history books by claiming her maiden BWF World Tour title at the Taipei Open Super 300. The Punjab native delivered a clinical performance, outclassing sixth seed Thuy Linh Nguyen of Vietnam 21-16, 21-16 in a swift 36-minute final.
Coached by Park Tae-sang—the former mentor of Olympic medalist PV Sindhu—Tanvi became the first Indian woman to lift the Taipei Open singles trophy since legendary shuttler Saina Nehwal did so in 2008.
A Masterclass in Dominance
Tanvi set the tone early in the opening game, using clever drop shots and deceptive strokes to catch Nguyen off guard. Rushing to a commanding 10-2 lead, she absorbed a mid-game comeback attempt by the Vietnamese veteran before reasserting dominance with sharp, powerful smashes to close out the first game 21-16.
Nguyen mounted a brief challenge in the second game, taking a 3-0 lead, but Tanvi quickly restored parity at 3-3. Mixing devastating smashes with delicate net play, the young Indian dictated the tempo of the rallies, stretching her lead to 15-10 and then 18-12. Though she let three of her seven match points slip, Tanvi sealed the biggest victory of her career with a decisive winner.
A Heartwarming Moment of Gratitude
Right after securing her historic win, Tanvi shared a poignant moment with her coach. In a gesture of deep respect and appreciation, she placed her newly awarded gold medal around Park Tae-sang’s neck before posing together for photos.
Breaking Records and Rewriting History
At 17 years and 222 days, Tanvi became the youngest finalist in Taipei Open history, breaking the long-standing record set by Korean doubles icon Lee Yong Dae in 2006 (17 years, 287 days).
This victory continues a meteoric rise over the past two years:
World Junior Championships: Became the first Indian shuttler to win two medals at a single edition (Silver in girls' singles, Bronze in the mixed team event).
Asian Team Championships: Played a key role in securing India’s maiden gold medal.
BWF Tour Success: A former World Junior No. 1, Tanvi had previously finished as runner-up at the 2025 US Open Super 300, Odisha Masters Super 100, and Guwahati Masters Super 100 before finally crossing the finish line in Taipei.
