Successful Maiden Test Execution
On July 23, 2026, India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) executed the successful maiden flight-test of the indigenous Project Kusha—also known as the Extended Range Air Defence System (ERADS).

Project Kusha was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) in May 2022 and received an Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for ₹21,700 crore ($2.6 billion) to procure five squadrons for the Indian Air Force.
M1 Interceptor (Range: 120–150 km): Engages tactical strike aircraft, anti-radiation missiles, and low-flying cruise missiles.
M2 Interceptor (Range: 250 km): Neutralizes high-altitude stand-off jammers, strategic bombers, and long-range UAVs.

Powered by dual-pulse solid-propellant rocket motors with thrust-vectoring nozzles, the interceptors achieve speeds exceeding Mach 5.5, relying on active AESA millimetre-wave RF and IR seekers alongside direct hit-to-kill kinetic impact technology.

Kusha forms the outer shield of India’s integrated air defence grid operating under the Indian Air Force’s Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS).

Dedicated production facilities in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka aim to produce 300 to 400 interceptor missiles annually by 2032.
Future Outlook & Testing Schedule
Beyond land deployments, DRDO is developing a naval variant for the Indian Navy’s Project 18 destroyers to counter high-speed anti-ship ballistic missiles. Additionally, unencumbered by end-user export restrictions, Kusha positions India as a potential exporter of long-range air defence platforms.
Target Roadmap:
Late 2026–2027: Developmental trials of the M2 (250 km) and M3 (400 km) variants from Abdul Kalam Island.
2027–2028: Integrated Indian Air Force user trials under active electronic warfare scenarios.
2028–2030: Phased induction of the first five Kusha squadrons into active IAF service.
