 India has successfully tested the Agni-5 missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicles (MIRV) technology, a significant achievement known as 'Mission Divyastra.' Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the scientists at the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) for this milestone. MIRV technology, with its sensitive implications for international security, enhances India's deterrence capability in the region. The successful test underscores India's strategic message to both China and Pakistan, positioning the country among a select group of nations possessing such advanced technology, including the US, UK, Russia, China, and France.


The Agni-5 missile, designed for nuclear deterrence against China, boasts a range of 5,000km-7,000km. The recent test, conducted by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) in Odisha, ensures the missile's ability to deploy multiple warheads at different locations. The system, equipped with indigenous avionics and high-accuracy sensor packages, reflects India's growing technological prowess. Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about a Chinese vessel near India's coast, potentially gathering military intelligence related to submarine deployments and missile tests.


MIRV technology, or Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicles, allows a single missile to carry multiple warheads, each capable of targeting different locations. In a MIRV-equipped missile, warheads are housed in the missile's bus, which maneuvers and releases them once outside Earth's atmosphere. This strategic advantage enables a single missile to simultaneously target multiple locations, complicating the enemy's defense strategy and significantly increasing firepower and deterrent value.


Despite the complexity of deploying MIRV technology, including challenges like miniaturization of warheads and development of advanced guidance systems, its integration with Agni-5 marks a major advancement in India's ballistic missile program. The development and deployment of MIRV technology are closely guarded due to their profound implications for international security and strategic balance. Successfully incorporating MIRV technology would elevate India's position in the global strategic landscape, akin to major nuclear powers such as the United States, Russia, China, the UK, and France.


The functioning of MIRV involves launching the missile into space, where the bus maneuvers and aligns itself based on designated targets before deploying multiple warheads along with decoys and countermeasures. Each warhead independently re-enters the Earth's atmosphere, proceeding towards its designated target, showcasing the sophisticated capabilities of this advanced technology
