Open Letter to The Times of India K.K. Kak 07 March 2016 I have read with interest the flurry of articles in your newspaper on JNU and Mr Kanhaiya Kumar. Of course, your newspaper is not the only one -- most English mainstream newspapers, news websites, and TV channels have been full of JNU and its students union president. However, your newspaper is stated to be India's number one selling English daily, and hence the one which counts the most – numerically, at any rate. You have apparently also deputed full-time two reporters -- Mr Manash Gohain and Ms Shreya Roychowdhury -- to write about JNU, since I have not recently seen them write about anything else. Hence, I wonder -- why this obsession with JNU? JNU's total enrolment is a little over 7000 -- against a Delhi University enrolment of well over a lakh, and a city population of well over a crore. The great hero Kanhaiya Kumar won a little over a thousand votes in the JNU elections, and that is the extent of his popular support. The three Leftist winners between them won about 4000 votes - compare this to the 20000 votes or so won by each of the ABVP's winning candidates in the DU elections, and you'll see just what the Leftist support base among Delhi's university students really is. And yet this minor institution with 5% of DU's student base and .05% of Delhi's population has managed to dominate your newspaper for weeks. On a daily basis we have been fed stories of what Kanhaiya was doing in jail, what he was thinking, what his mother was saying, what his brother was saying, what his poet buddy was writing, what his cartoonist buddy was drawing -- he probably had more articles written about him in the English language press than the total votes he got in the JNU elections! And this might not have been so bad if we were getting actual news. Kanhaiya being arrested, and subsequently being released on bail, is news. What he is eating, reading, or thinking, is not. And what was the sum total of the information we got from this blanket coverage? We learnt that Kanhaiya has declared his faith in the Constitution (whether this declaration was genuine or strategic, even the High Court couldn't decide). We learnt that his mother (and brother and other sundry relatives) believed in his innocence -- so did the mothers of Ishrat Jahan, Ajmal Kasab, and the Boston bomber Tsarnaev. We learnt that his friends are writing poems and drawing cartoons for him -- I hope that if I ever write a poem about someone who's been jailed (shouldn't be difficult, there are several lakh undertrials in this country), you'll be kind enough to interview me. We learnt that Kanhaiya had said nice things about this country in an inter-college debate a decade ago. It would have been nice if you had gone on to analyze whether positions taken a decade ago necessarily define our characters today (a decade ago, Boston bomber Dzokhar Tsarnaev was a cute 12-year-old -- and many of the teenagers being indoctrinated by ISIS today were even cuter 7 or 8-year-olds)-- but then, you are not presenting analyses, but creating a hagiography. My primary learning from you is that Kanhaiya had been living off taxpayer money as a student a decade ago, and he's still living off the taxpayer today -- just how long does it take to finish college? As for the great excitement that Kanhaiya is fighting for the underprivileged -- just what actual fighting has he done? There are people who slog in the villages, in the most backward of areas, and never get written about. Kanhaiya's contribution is limited to making loud speeches in the comfort of his university campus while being fed by taxpayer money - - and that makes him a hero? His recent speeches are about how a poor man like him could fight the government. One would have thought that a poor man's primary focus would be to finish his education and get a job so that he could support his family - but evidently not. Kanhaiya Kumar apparently has a family income of Rs.3000 per month, but his focus at age 28 is to contest elections, not to get a job. Many of us finish college in 3-5 years, get jobs, support families, and pay taxes, all before age 28 -- but then, we're not Kanhaiya. And if we all were, there wouldn't be any tax money to fund JNU and Kanhaiya! You will note that I am not going into the sedition or anti-national issue -- that is not my point here. My point is that -- innocent or guilty -- Kanhaiya Kumar is a relative non-entity who has been blown up out of all proportion by your newspaper's hysterical (and generally adulatory) coverage. The latest is about Kanhaiya's friends and a victory march -- what victory? Getting conditional bail while being ticked off by the judge? Enough is enough -- it is time to send Kanhaiya back to the classroom where he belongs, and give us real news to read. Of course, Kanhaiya may NOT return to the classroom -- he is apparently planning to campaign for the Left in Bengal and Kerala, though after his high court bail he is singing a slightly different song. All while the taxpayers -- many of them several years younger than Kanhaiya -- are funding his JNU fees, board, and lodging. Your reporters are apparently pretty close to Kanhaiya and his family -- could they possibly ask them -- if Kanhaiya isn't planning to actually study -- to refund our tax money?

एक आम भारतीय टैक्स-पेयर का लेटर JNU के अध्यक्ष कन्हैया कुमार के नाम #कन्हैया_कुमार, आपका भाषण सुना जो आपने जेल से वापस आ कर दिया, सुना कि आपको ग़रीबी, भुखमरी, जातिवाद, साम्राज्यवाद और पूँजीवाद से आज़ादी चाहिये। मेरे विचार मे, इन सबसे आजादी पाने के लिए मन लगाकर पढाई करें, खूब मेहनत करें, कैरियर बनायें और आगे बढ़ें तो अपने आप मिल जायेगी आजादी और अापके साथी जो नारे लगा रहे हैं उनको भी ये समझायें। आपका भाषण तो अच्छा था लेकिन मैं आपकी बातों में लाजिक ढूँढ़ने की कोशिश कर रही थी, इसके लिये मेरे दो चार सवाल है ज़वाब देने की मेहरबानी करें 1- आपका भाषण तो पूरा राजनैतिक था, तो ये पढ़ाई का ढोंग क्यों?? बाहर आईये और राजनीति में करियर चमकाईये और अपनी जगह किसी उपयुक्त छात्र को दीजिये जो पढ़ाई के नाम पर राजनीति न करे। पढ़ाई के नाम पर ये मुफ़्तख़ोरी बंद करिये, आपके राजनैतिक करियर पर टैक्स पेयर जनता का पैसा बर्बाद क्यों हो?? 2- ग़रीबी, भुखमरी, जातिवाद, साम्राज्यवाद और पूँजीवाद ... लेकिन ये नही बताया ये समस्या कब से है ? और इसके असली जिम्मेदार कौन है ?? ज़रा बतायेंगे ये सारी समस्यायें कब से हैं ?? या ये सिर्फ पिछले 18 महीने मे खड़ी हुई हैं ?? जो पार्टी 60 सालों से राज कर रही थी उसकी जवाबदारी कितनी मानते है या उनके शासन में रामराज्य था ??आप प्रधानमंत्री की सूट पकड़ कर उनसे प्रश्न पूछना चाहते हैं तो सोनिया गांधी की साड़ी पकड़ कर उनसे प्रश्न क्यों नही पूछते?? 3- आपके बताया नहीं कि ग़रीबी, भुखमरी, जातिवाद, साम्राज्यवाद और पूँजीवाद को कैसे हटायेंगे और इसका ब्लूप्रिंट क्या है या सिर्फ़ नारों से हट जायेगी ?? आज सारी दुनिया मे वामपंथ फ़ेल हो चुका है तो ये भारत में किस तरह से सफल होगा ?? 4- आपकी पार्टी की सरकार पश्चिम बंगाल मे 35 साल तक थी, आप बतायेंगे कितनी ग़रीबी, भुखमरी या जातिवाद दूर हो गया?? आँकड़े तो इसका उल्टा ही बताते हैं तो हम क्यो विश्वास करें आपका?? 5- अगर भारत के संिवधान या लोकतांत्रिक मूल्यों में विश्वास करते हैं तो जनता के बीच जाकर, चुनाव लड़कर ईमानदारी से सिस्टम मे सुधार करते और ग़रीबी भुखमरी के खिलाफ लड़ते न कि जनता द्वारा चुनी हुई सरकार के खिलाफ ज़हर उगलते 6. आपको पुलिसवाला अपने जैसा ही इंसान लगा अच्छी बात है पर बतायेंगे जिन पुलिसवालों को दंतेवाड़ा में आपके साथियों(DSU) ने मारा वो अपने जैसे लगते थे या नही ?? जिनकी मौत पर JNU में जश्न मनाया जाता है वो भी ग़रीब परिवार के ही थे जिन्हें लाल सलाम वालों ने मारा है 7- आपको फ़ौजी भी अपने जैसे लगते हैं ना, तो आपके साथ कंधे से कंधा मिला कर जो नारे देते हैं 'भारत तेरे टुकड़े होंगे' कभी सोचा है उनके उपर क्या गुज़रती होगी ?? उनका मोराल कितना डाउन होता होगा ?? कभी सोचा है एक भारतीय की आत्मा तड़पती है जब JNU के ये नारे सुनते हैं "भारत की बर्बादी तक जंग रहेगी" आपको भी यही लगता तो आप कहीं विरोध दर्ज करते ना 8- आप कहते है कि इस देश के क़ानून पर आपको भरोसा है तो कैसे आपके साथी तो आपके सामने ही नारा देते हैं ?? "अफ़ज़ल हम शर्मिंदा हैं, तेरे क़ातिल ज़िंदा हैंंंं', "कितने अफ़ज़ल मारोगे, घर घर से अफ़ज़ल निकलेगा", पुलिस वालों से आपको सहानुभूति है ना, कितने पुलिसवाले संसद में हुए हमले में कितने मरे मालूम है या दिल में अफ़ज़ल से आधी भी सहानुभूति है ?? ये भारत की सर्वोच्च न्यायालय का ही तो फ़ैसला था फिर ये आपका ढोंग नहीं है तो और क्या है ?? 9- रोहित वेमुला जिसका SFI से मोहभंग हो चुका था उसका येचुरी के बारे में लिखा ख़त/विचार क्यो नहीं बताया?? क्योंकि वो आपकी विचारधारा को सपोर्ट नहीं करता ??मरने वाला इंसान कभी झूठ नहीं बोलता और dying declaration तो कोर्ट भी मानता है, जब रोहित ने आख़िरी ख़त में किसी को भी ज़िम्मेदार नहीं बताया पर आप किसी न किसी तरह से इसका भी राजनैतिक फ़ायदा उठाना चाहते है तभी तो ये मुद्दा बार बार उठाते हैं आपकी असली समस्या है एबीवीपी, आरएसएस, बीजेपी और मोदी जिनसे आज़ादी चाहिये, आपको लोकतांत्रिक ढंग से चुनी सरकार नहीं चाहिये क्योंकि आपको पंसद नही, उसके जाने के बाद सब आज़ादी मिल जायेगी। भाषण की जगह बस एकबार अपना ही जजमेंट ही पढ़ कर सुना देते छात्रों के सामने, ख़ुद पर शर्म आ जायेगी और सारी ग़लतफ़हमी दूर हो जायेगी एक आम भारतीय

Monday, March 07th, 2016 कन्हैया पुढे व सरकार मागे असे विचित्र चित्र निर्माण झाले. त्याचीही जबाबदारी कुणाला तरी घ्यावीच लागेल. असे तरुण राष्ट्रद्रोही की राजद्रोही ते ठरवून त्यांच्या जिभा कापणारे व त्यांच्यावर गोळ्या झाडण्याचे आदेश देणारे देशाला अराजकाच्या खाईत ढकलत आहेत. कन्हैयाने आव्हान उभे केले आहे ते फुकट प्रसिद्धीचे. अन्न, पाणी, औषधे महाग झाली तरी प्रसिद्धी फुकट आहे. फक्त ती दुसर्‍यांना मिळू नये हाच वादाचा विषय दिसतोय. कन्हैया पुढे, सरकार मागे फुकट प्रसिद्धी! ‘जेएनयू’तील राजद्रोही प्रकरणांमुळे झोतात आलेला कन्हैया कुमार राजकारण्यांसारखा पोपटपंची करू लागला आहे. जवाहरलाल नेहरू विद्यापीठात अफझल गुरूची पुण्यथिती साजरी केली, त्या कार्यक्रमात देशविरोधी नारे देण्याच्या आरोपाखाली कन्हैया कुमारला अटक झाली व त्याच्यावर देशद्रोहाचा गुन्हा लावण्यात आला (तो देशद्रोह नसून राजद्रोह असल्याची व्याख्या कन्हैया करतो), पण आता जामिनावर सुटलेला कन्हैया जहरील्या नागासारखा रोज डंख मारीत आहे व फणा हलवून भाजप आणि त्यांच्या इतर मंडळींना घाबरवून सोडत आहे. कन्हैयावर देशद्रोहाचा आरोप आहे याचे भान न ठेवता तुरुंगातून सुटताच त्याचे विरोचीत स्वागत झाले. जेएनयू परिसरात त्याने पत्रकार परिषद घेतली व सहजसोप्या भाषेत तो बरेच काही सांगून गेला. त्याचे हे सांगणे म्हणजे राज्यकर्त्यांना विखारी वाटणे साहजिक आहे. कारण अण्णा हजारे, केजरीवाल यांच्यानंतर एका नवख्या तरुणास ‘मीडिया’ने हीरो करून डोक्यावर घेतले. कन्हैया कुमार याला फुकटची प्रसिद्धी मिळत आहे असा टोला व्यंकय्या नायडू यांनी मारला. विद्यार्थ्यांनी शिकावे, आंदोलने व राजकारण करू नये असे नायडू यांनी म्हटले आहे. कन्हैया यास फुकटची प्रसिद्धी मिळते असे नायडू यांचे म्हणणे असेल तर त्यास कोण जबाबदार आहे? सध्या आपल्या देशात काहीच फुकट मिळत नाही व लहानसहान गोष्टींचीही जबर किंमत मोजावी लागते. मजूर वर्ग, कामगार वर्गाच्या कष्टाच्या ‘प्रॉव्हिडंट फंडा’च्या पैशांवरही सरकारने आता कर लावला. म्हणजे थोडक्यात देशासाठी राबणार्‍या श्रमिकांच्या घामावरही कर लावून ‘फुकट काही नाही’ हेच सरकारने दाखवून दिले. पुन्हा प्रसिद्धी माध्यमातही जे विकते तेच पिकवले जाते. कन्हैया याच्यावर देशद्रोहाचा गुन्हा आहे व तरीही त्यास फुकट प्रसिद्धी देण्याची स्पर्धा सुरू असेल तर सरकारने त्याची गंभीर दखल घ्यायला हवी व देशद्रोहासारखा गंभीर गुन्हा दाखल होऊनही मि. कन्हैया कुमार हे इतक्या लवकर जामिनावर सुटले कसे? गुजरातमध्ये पटेल आरक्षणाचे आंदोलन चालविणारे हार्दिक पटेल यांच्यावरही देशद्रोहाचाच गुन्हा दाखल झाला. त्यांच्याकडून अनवधानाने तिरंग्याचा अपमान झाल्याचे हे काहीसे प्रकरण आहे, पण हार्दिक पटेल यांना अनेक महिने झाले तरी जामीन नाही. कर्नल पुरोहित, साध्वी प्रज्ञा यांच्यासारख्यांना जामीन नाही, पण जेएनयू प्रकरणाचा इतका गाजावाजा होऊनही देशद्रोहाचा आरोपी दहा-पंधरा दिवसांत जामिनावर सुटतो व बाहेर येऊन सरकारच्या टोप्या उडवतो हा काय प्रकार आहे? कन्हैयास जास्त काळ आत ठेवल्याने सरकारला जड गेले असते व अनेक प्रश्‍नांना तोंड द्यावे लागले असते असे म्हणतात ते खरेच मानावे काय? नायडू म्हणतात त्याप्रमाणे कन्हैया फुकट प्रसिद्धी घेत आहे व त्यास आपली यंत्रणा व व्यवस्था जबाबदार आहे. कन्हैयाची जीभ कापून आणणार्‍यास व कन्हैयाचे मुंडके उडवणार्‍यास पाच-दहा लाखांची बक्षिसे लावली गेली आणि त्यामागे भारतीय जनता युवा मोर्चाचे पदाधिकारी असल्याचे बोलले जाते. या उठवळ प्रकारांमुळे कन्हैया कुमार हा जास्तच ‘हीरो’ झाला आहे. पुन्हा क्रिकेटपटू सुरेेश रैना, अभिनेते शत्रुघ्न सिन्हा, बिहारचे मुख्यमंत्री नितीशकुमार यांच्यासारखे लोक कन्हैयाचे समर्थन करतात हा नक्की काय प्रकार समजायचा? सोशल मीडियावरदेखील या कन्हैया कुमारचा सध्या बोलबाला आहे. अर्थात कन्हैयाचा ‘हीरो’ म्हणून उद्घोष करणार्‍यांना सणसणीत चपराक देणारा एक संदेशदेखील सोशल मीडियावर फिरत आहे. ‘एक भाषण से हीरो बन सकते है, पागल थे सरहदपे खून बहा दिया’ हा तो संदेश. अत्यंत मार्मिक आणि कन्हैया प्रकरणाच्या पार्श्‍वभूमीवर समर्पक. कारण कन्हैयासारख्याला जर केवळ एका भाषणाच्या जोरावर ‘हीरो’ केले जात असेल तर सीमेवर देशासाठी रक्त सांडणारे, प्रसंगी हौतात्म्य पत्करणारे आमचे जवान ‘वेडे’ नाही का ठरणार? देशासाठी बलिदान करणारे आमचे जवान खरे हीरो की भाषणबाजी करणारी कन्हैयासारखी मंडळी हे ठरविण्याची वेळ आली आहे. सरसंघचालक मोहन भागवत यांनीही ‘‘सध्याच्या तरुणांना देशभक्ती शिकवावी लागते, ‘भारतमाता की जय’ असे वदवून घ्यावे लागते,’’ अशी खंत अलीकडेच व्यक्त केली. बंदुकीत दारू ठासून भरावी अशी देशभक्ती ठासून भरता येत नाही हे खरे असले तरी या देशात कन्हैयासारख्या माथेफिरू(?) तरुणांची पैदाईश का वाढली आहे याचे काही चिंतन होणार आहे की नाही? राष्ट्रद्रोह्यांची वकिली vasudeo kulkarni Wednesday, March 02, 2016 AT 11:27 AM (IST) Tags: ag1 लोकशाहीचे पवित्र मंदिर असलेल्या संसदेवर दहशतवाद्यांनी चढवलेल्या महाभीषण हल्ल्याचा सूत्रधार अफजल गुरू याचे कृत्य राष्ट्रद्रोहाचे आणि अक्षम्य असल्यानेच, सर्वोच्च न्यायालयाने त्याच्या फाशीवर शिक्कामोर्तब केले. त्याने केलेला दयेचा अर्जही राष्ट्रपतींनी फेटाळून लावल्यावर, 2013 मध्ये अफजलला फाशी दिले गेले. त्याच्या फाशीच्या शिक्षेची अंमलबजावणी झाली तेव्हा केंद्रात काँग्रेसच्या नेतृत्वाखालचे पंतप्रधान डॉ. मनमोहन सिंग यांचे सरकार सत्तेवर होते. त्या सरकारमध्ये पी. चिदंबरम तेव्हा अर्थमंत्री होते. त्या आधी 2008 ते 2012 अखेर गृहमंत्री होते. अफजलच्या फाशीच्या शिक्षेची अंमलबजावणी झाली, तेव्हा गृहमंत्रिपदावर असलेल्या सुशीलकुमार शिंदे, यांनी या शिक्षेचे जोरदार समर्थनही केले होते. अफजलला फाशी दिल्यावर, काश्मीर खोर्‍यातल्या काही दहशतवादी -फुटीरतावादी राष्ट्रद्रोही संघटनांनी हरताळ पाळून त्या घटनेचा निषेधही केला होता. पण अफजलने केलेला गुन्हा अक्षम्य असल्यानेच, सरकारने त्याच्या सहानुभूतीदारांचे ते तथाकथित आंदोलन मोडून काढले होते. अफजलला फाशी दिल्यावर चिदंबरम यांनी ब्र शब्दही काढला नव्हता. पण आता राजधानी दिल्लीतल्या जवाहरलाल नेहरू विद्यापीठात खुले आम ‘पाकिस्तान झिंदाबाद’च्या घोषणा आणि अफजल गुरूला देशभक्त ठरवायसाठी विद्यार्थ्यांच्या मेळाव्याच्या घटनेनंतर, सत्ताधारी भारतीय जनता पक्षाच्या सरकारवर तथाकथित पुरोगाम्यांनी टीकेची झोड उठवताच, याच चिदंबरम यांना राष्ट्रद्रोही अफजल गुरूचा पुळका आला आहे. काँग्रेसच्या अध्यक्ष सोनिया गांधी आणि उपाध्यक्ष राहुल गांधी, यांनी नेहरू विद्यापीठातल्या त्या प्रकरणात कन्हैय्याकुमारसह सात विद्यार्थ्यांना अटक केल्याबद्दल केंद्र सरकारवर टीकेची झोड उठवली आहे. आपण राष्ट्रद्रोही कृत्याचे समर्थन करीत आहोत, याचे भान त्यांना राहिलेले नाही. नेहरू विद्यापीठातला प्रा. एस. आर. गिलानी आणि त्याच्या विकृत टोळक्याने विद्यापीठाच्या परिसरातच अफजल गुरूच्या फाशीवर जोरदार टीका करीत चिथावणीखोर भाषणे केली होती. अफजल गुरू हा काश्मीरमध्ये स्वातंत्र्यासाठी लढणार्‍या युवकांचे प्रेरणास्थान असल्याची गरळ ओकली होती. अफजल गुरूच्या राष्ट्रद्रोही कृत्याचे उदात्तीकरण करायची ही घटना, देशाच्या ऐक्य आणि अखंडतेला, कायद्याच्या राज्यालाच आव्हान देणारी आहे, असे तथाकथित पुरोगाम्यांना वाटत नाही. त्यांच्या सुरात सूर मिसळत चिदंबरम, यांनी अफजल गुरूला दिलेली फाशी संशयास्पद असल्याचे मत व्यक्त करीत, केंद्र सरकारने केलेेली कारवाई चुकीचे असल्याबद्दल गळा काढला आहे. आपण सत्तेत असताना, न्यायालयाचा निर्णय चुकीचा होता, असे आपल्याला म्हणता येत नव्हते. पण त्याच्या विरुद्ध सरकारने केलेली कारवाई एक स्वतंत्र व्यक्ती म्हणून चुकीची होती, असे त्यांचे म्हणणे आहे. अफजल गुरूच्या खटल्याची सुनावणी योग्यप्रकारे झाली नाही. अफजल गुरूचा संसदेवरच्या हल्ल्यात किती सहभाग होता, हे पण संशयास्पदच होते, असेही ते म्हणाले आहेत. आपल्याच सरकारने राष्ट्रद्रोह्याला दिलेली फाशी चुकीची होती, असे सांगणार्‍या या उपटसुंभ पुरोगामी संधिसाधू नेत्याचे हे वक्तव्य आगलावे आणि राष्ट्रद्रोह्यांचे समर्थन करणारेच आहे, ही बाब सूर्यप्रकाशाइतकी स्वच्छ आणि लखलखीत असल्याने, या वक्तव्याचे गंभीर परिणाम काँग्रेसलाही भोगावे लागतील. राष्ट्राशी गद्दारीच पी. चिदंबरम हे सर्वोच्च न्यायालयात वकिली करणारे ख्यातनाम कायदेतज्ञ आहेत. कायद्याचा अर्थ त्यांना चांगलाच समजतो. राष्ट्रद्रोह म्हणजे काय आणि या गुन्ह्यासाठी शिक्षा काय हे ही त्यांना माहिती आहे. ते केंद्रीय गृहमंत्रिपदावर असताना काश्मीरमधल्या शेकडो दहशतवादांचे मुडदे सुरक्षा दल आणि लष्कराच्या जवानांनी पाडले होते. काश्मीरमध्ये दहशतवादी कारवाया, सामूहिक हत्याकांडे घडवणारे हे नराधम स्वातंत्र्यसैनिक आहेत, अशी भलावण पाकिस्तानचे माजी अध्यक्ष आणि लष्करप्रमुख परवेज मुशर्रफ यांनी केली होती. मुशर्रफ पाकिस्तानी आहेत तर चिदंबरम भारतीय आहेत, एवढाच काय तो फरक! ते गृहमंत्रिपदावर असतानाही, अफजल गुरूवरच्या फाशीचे प्रकरण सरकारसमोर होतेच. सत्तेच्या खुर्चीला घट्ट चिकटून बसलेल्या चिदंबरम, यांना त्या राष्ट्रद्रोह्याला फाशी दिली गेली, तेव्हा काही बोलावे वाटले नाही. अफजल गुरूला झालेली फाशीची शिक्षा चुकीची-संशयास्पद होती, असे या तथाकथित स्वतंत्र व्यक्तीला वाटत होते, तर त्यांनी मंत्रिपदाचा राजीनामा देऊन सर्वोच्च न्यायालयात अफजल गुरूचे वकीलपत्र घ्यायला हवे होते. तो निर्दोष असल्याचे सिद्ध करून दाखवायला हवे होते. तसे त्यांनी केले नाही. सत्ता आणि खासदारकी गेल्यावर आपण पुरोगामी विचारवंत आहोत, अशी जाणीव त्यांना व्हायला लागली आहे. पण त्यांचा हा पुरोगामीपणा म्हणजे शुद्ध ढोंगबाजी आणि राष्ट्राशी गद्दारीच आहे. डॉ. मनमोहन सिंग यांच्या सरकारमध्ये तेव्हा मंत्री आणि ख्यातनाम कायदेपंडित असलेल्या कपिल सिब्बल, यांनीही अफजल गुरूला दिलेली फाशी कायद्यानुसारच असल्याचे आणि काँग्रेस पक्षाचे सरकार सत्तेवर असतानाच त्या शिक्षेची अंमलबजावणी झाल्याची आठवण, नेहरू विद्यापीठातल्या प्रकरणाला राजकीय रंग चढताच, सत्ताधारी भारतीय जनता पक्षाच्या नेत्यांना करून दिली. सिब्बल स्वच्छ आणि सत्य बोलले. त्यांनी सत्याची बाजू सत्ता सोडल्यावरही सोडलेली नाही. पण सक्रिय राजकारणातून हकालपट्टी झालेल्या पी. चिदंबरम यांनी मात्र सत्यालाच चूड लावत, सवंग प्रसिद्धीसाठी राष्ट्रद्रोह्यांचा कैवार घेत त्यांची वकिली सुरू केली आहे. स्वतंत्रपणे बोलणे, मत व्यक्त करणे, हा काही देशद्रोह नाही. संसदेच्या सार्वभौमत्वावर, पावित्र्यावर घाला घालणारे वक्तव्य, हे देशद्रोही ठरते. नेहरू विद्यापीठातली घोषणाबाजी देशद्रोही नाही, असा निर्वाळाही देत त्यांनी खुलेआम फुटीरतावादी आणि राष्ट्रद्रोह्यांची बेशरमपणे तळी उचलली आहे. संसदेच्या सार्वभौमत्वाला आव्हान देणे गुन्हा आहे, तर संसदेवर सशस्त्र हल्ला चढवणे, हा गुन्हा आहे, असे मात्र या भंपक वकिलाला वाटत नाही. काँग्रेसने हे अस्तनीतले निखारे काढून टाकले नाहीत, तर ते पक्षाच्या घरालाच आग लावल्याशिवाय राहणार नाहीत. © Copyrights 2014 Dainik Aikya.com - All rights reservediv dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

कन्हैयाचे कवित्व (अग्रलेख) कन्हैयाकुमार याची जामिनावर सुटका झाल्यावर स्वातंत्र्य चळवळीत यावा तसा कैफ काही जणांना आला आहे. सुटका झाल्यानंतर त्याने जोरदार भाषण केले. त्यातून अनेेकांना एकदम भावी राष्ट्रीय नेतृत्वाचा साक्षात्कार होऊ लागला आहे. खरे तर महाराष्ट्रातील अनेक तरुण नेत्यांनी यापूर्वी याहून जोरदार व अधिक अभ्यासपूर्ण भाषणे केली आहेत. दमदार दलित वक्त्यांची यादी तर मोठी आहे. मात्र त्यांची भाषणे मोबाइलवरून व्हायरल केली जात नव्हती. कन्हैया याबाबत नशीबवान आहे. नाटकी आहे. त्याचे भाषण डाव्या विचारांमध्ये चांगले घोळलेले आहे. त्याने मांडलेले मुद्दे आकर्षक आहेत. त्याचे स्वागत केलेच पाहिजे. ‘आम्हाला भारतापासून स्वातंत्र्य नको आहे, भारतात स्वातंत्र्य हवे आहे,’ असे तो म्हणताच "वा, वा!' म्हणून टाळी पडली. प्रत्येकाला भारतातच स्वातंत्र्य हवे आहे. पण भारता"पासून’ स्वातंत्र्य हवे, असे म्हणणारे जेव्हा कन्हैयाच्या पुढ्यात नाचत होते तेव्हा त्यांना आवरायला तो पुढे का झाला नाही, हा मुख्य सवाल आहे. देशविरोधी घोषणा त्याने दिल्या नसल्या तरी देशविरोधी घोषणा त्याने थांबवल्याही नाहीत. देेशाचे तुकडे करा असे म्हणणाऱ्यांचा शर्ट धरण्याची हिंमत मोदींचा सूट धरण्यास निघालेल्या कन्हैयामध्ये नव्हती. ती का नव्हती, याचे उत्तर कन्हैया वा त्याच्या समर्थकांकडून हवे आहे. देशविघातक घोषणा चुकीच्या होत्या असे अजूनही कन्हैया म्हणत नाही. आता कन्हैयाला जिकडेतिकडे भाषणांची आमंत्रणे येतील. घटनेच्या चौकटीत राहून देशविरोधी भाषणे कशी द्यायची याचे एक तंत्र असते. ते जेएनयूच्या विद्यार्थ्यांना चांगले माहीत असते. त्याच तंत्राने ही भाषणे दिली जातील. एकीकडे घटनेच्या सन्मानाची भाषा बोलायची आणि दुसरीकडे देशद्रोही कृत्यांना हळूच जागा करून द्यायची, असा हा डाव असतो व तो अनेकदा खेळला गेला आहे. मुळात स्वातंत्र्याची गळचेपी झाली आहे असा सार्वत्रिक अनुभव नागरिकांना आलेला दिसत नाही. विरोध अनेक गोष्टींना होतो; पण जाहीर गळचेपी क्वचितच झालेली दिसते. जेएनयूचा इतिहास तपासला तर अनेकांची बौद्धिक गळचेपी तेथे झालेली आहे व त्याबद्दल लिहिलेही गेले आहे. मात्र त्यावर कधीही ओरड झाली नाही. कारण ते राजकीयदृष्ट्या सोयीचे नव्हते. भारतात लाल क्रांती घडवून आणण्याचे जे स्वप्न गेली सत्तर वर्षे डावे पाहत आहेत ते मोदी सरकारच्या आगमनाने एकदम भंगले. तेव्हापासून देश फॅसिस्ट झाला आहे असा गजर सुरू झाला. संघ परिवारातील वाह्यात व बेताल बडबड करणाऱ्यांना मोदी व भागवत यांनी वेळीच वेसण न घातल्याने तो गजर खरा वाटू लागला. आता त्याने अधिक उंची गाठली आहे. कन्हैयावर लादलेला देशद्रोहाचा गुन्हा तद्दन मूर्खपणा असला तरी देशविरोधी लहानसहान कारवायांकडे दुर्लक्ष करून चालत नाही. जेएनयूपाठोपाठ बंगालमधील जाधवपूर विश्वविद्यालयात निदर्शने झाली. तेथे तर ‘वंदे मातरम्’ म्हणणाऱ्यांना रोखण्यासाठी शिक्षकच पुढे आले, असे प्रसिद्ध झाले आहे. याच जाधवपूर विश्वविद्यालयात ७० मध्ये कन्हैयासारख्या नेत्यांचे पीक उगवले होते. वसतिगृहे शस्त्रसज्ज झाली होती व ‘चेअरमन माओ हाच आमचा चेअरमन, भारताचा पंतप्रधान नव्हे,’ अशा जाहीर घोषणा होऊ लागल्या, नक्षलवाद वाढला. यातून पुढे बंगालमध्ये डाव्यांचे सरकार आले. त्यानंतर बंगालची आर्थिक पीछेहाट सुरू झाली ती अद्यापही थांबलेली नाही. जेएनयू हे जाधवपूरच्या मार्गाने जाण्याचा धोका आहे. म्हणून तेथे पोलिसांचा प्रवेेश नको अशी मागणी होते. विश्वविद्यालय ही भारताच्या अंतर्गत सार्वभौम भूमी असते काय? उद्या तेथे अतिरेकी लपून बसले तर कुलगुरूंची परवानगी घेऊन कारवाई करणार काय? पोलिसांना प्रवेश करावा लागू नये असे वर्तन विद्यापीठात होत असेल तर पोलिस शिरणारच नाहीत. पण तसे वर्तन होत नसेल तर पोलिसांनी लक्ष ठेवण्यात काहीच वावगे नाही. एक फार प्रतिष्ठित, दर्जेदार विद्यापीठ अशी जेएनयूची प्रतिमा निर्माण केली गेली आहे. वास्तवात तेथे फार दर्जेदार संशोधन झालेले नाही. जागतिक संशोधन क्षेत्रात जेएनयूच्या शिक्षकांपैकी अगदी मोजक्यांचेच निबंध प्रसिद्ध झाले आहेत. जेएनयूबद्दल बोलताना केंब्रिज, हार्वर्ड, ऑक्सफर्ड अशी नावे घेतली जातात व तेथील स्वातंत्र्याचा उल्लेख होतो. अशी तुलना करणाऱ्यांनी तेथील संशोधन व जेएनयूतील संशोधन याचीही तुलना करावी. संशोधन करून देशाला पुढे नेणे हे विद्यापीठाचे मुख्य काम असते. शास्त्रीय संशोधनाने ज्या वेगाने सामाजिक समानता येते तशी भाषणांनी कधीच येत नाही. कन्हैयाच्या भाषणाने भारून जाताना याचाही विचार केला पाहिजे

देशाच्या सुरक्षेचा एनकाउंटर या घटना आयबीचे मनोधैर्य खच्ची करणाऱ्या होत्या मुंबई | गृह खात्याचे निवृत्त उपसचिव आर वी एस मणी यांची एका आघाडीच्या इंग्रजी वृत्तवाहिनीला दिलेली खळबळजनक मुलाखत ही या लेखाचे निमित्त असली तरी गेल्या महिन्याभरात माजी गृहमंत्री पी चिदंबरम यांच्यावर गृह खात्यातील आणखी २ वरिष्ठ निवृत्त अधिकाऱ्यांनी गंभीर आरोप केले आहेत भारताच्या आंतरिक सुरक्षेसाठी जबाबदार असणारे केंद्रीय गृहमंत्री, संविधानावर हात ठेऊन घेतलेल्या शपथेला न जागता, राजकीय फायद्यासाठी किंवा अन्य कोणत्या अंतस्थ हेतूने, केंद्रीय तपास यंत्रणा (सीबीआय) आणि गुप्तहेर खात्याला (आयबी) या दोन सुरक्षा यंत्रणांना एकमेकांविरूद्ध झुंजवत असतील तर ही देशाच्या इतिहासातील सर्वात काळ्या घटनांपैकी एक आहे. गृह खात्याचे निवृत्त उपसचिव आर वी एस मणी यांची एका आघाडीच्या इंग्रजी वृत्तवाहिनीला दिलेली खळबळजनक मुलाखत ही या लेखाचे निमित्त असली तरी गेल्या महिन्याभरात माजी गृहमंत्री पी चिदंबरम यांच्यावर गृह खात्यातील आणखी २ वरिष्ठ निवृत्त अधिकाऱ्यांनी गंभीर आरोप केले आहेत. प्रकरण १५ जून २००४ रोजी लष्कर-ए-तैय्यबाशी संबंधित असलेल्या मुंब्र्यातील इशरत जहाँ आणि अन्य ३ अतिरेक्यांच्या चकमकीत झालेल्या मृत्यूचे आणि त्याच्या चौकशीच्या राजकारणाचे आहे. गुप्तहेर खात्याच्या (आयबी) म्हणण्यानुसार लष्करचे काही अतिरेकी भारतातील उच्चपदस्थ राजकीय नेत्यांच्या हत्येची योजना बनवत आहेत ही माहिती मिळाल्यानंतर त्यांनी या अतिरेक्यांना आपल्या जाळ्यात ओढून गुजरातला आणले. १५ जून २००४ रोजी तत्कालीन मुख्यमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी यांच्या हत्येसाठी हे अतिरेकी अहमदाबादला जात असता त्यांच्याशी झालेल्या चकमकीत त्यांचा मृत्यू झाला. बीएससीच्या दुसऱ्या वर्षाला शिकत असलेली मुंब्र्यातील इशरत जहाँ ही १९ वर्षांची मुलगी लष्करसाठी काम करत होती ही धक्कादायक गोष्ट तेव्हा पुढे आली. गेल्या महिन्यात २६/११च्या दहशतवादी हल्ल्यांच्या न्यायालयीन सुनावणी दरम्यान डेव्हिड हेडलीकडून ती पुन्हा एकदा स्पष्ट झाली. पण जेव्हा ही घटना घडली तेव्हा, वोटबॅंकेच्या राजकारणापोटी कॉंग्रेस, राष्ट्रवादी तसेच अनेक स्वयंघोषित सेक्युलर नेत्यांना इशरत ही निरपराध असून या घटनेशी काही संबंध नसताना तिचे घरातून अपहरण करून तिला व अन्य तिघा लोकांना खोट्या चकमकीत मारल्याचा साक्षात्कार झाला होता. पण आयबी आणि गुजरात पोलिसांच्या दाव्यापुढे तेव्हा त्याचा टिकाव लागू शकला नाही. २००९ साली गुजरातमध्ये नरेंद्र मोदींचे आणि केंद्रात काँग्रेस आघाडीचे (यूपीए २) सरकार होते. लोकसभा निवडणुकीत भाजपच्या पराभवानंतर नरेंद्र मोदींचे देशाच्या राजकारणातील स्थान अधिकाधिक बळकट होऊ लागल्याने त्यांना नामोहरम करण्यासाठी इशरत जहाँ चकमक प्रकरणाचा वापर करण्याचे कारस्थान दिल्लीच्या सत्तावर्तुळात शिजले असावे असा संशय व्यक्त करण्यात येत आहे. नरेंद्र मोदी आणि गुजरातचे तत्कालीन गृहमंत्री अमित शहांचा इशरत जहाँच्या चकमकीशी संबंध जोडण्यासाठी अनेक गोष्टी या काळात करण्यात आल्या. डेव्हिड हेडलीने सीबीआयला दिलेल्या साक्षीतून इशरत जहाँबद्दलचा कबुली जबाब सोयीस्कररित्या वगळण्यात आला. त्याच प्रमाणे न्यायालयामध्ये या चकमकीबाबत सादर करण्यात आलेले प्रतिज्ञापत्र बदलण्यात आले. नवीन प्रतिज्ञापत्रात इशरत आणि अन्य अतिरेक्यांचा लष्करशी असलेल्या संबंधांबाबतचा भाग वगळण्यात आला. नुकतेच निवृत्त गृहसचिव (गृह खात्यातील सर्वोच्च शासकीय अधिकारी) जी के पिल्लई यांनी असे म्हटले आहे की, हे प्रतिज्ञापत्र बदलण्याचा निर्णय त्यांच्याहून वरिष्ठ पातळीवर (म्हणजेच गृहमंत्र्यांद्वारे) घेण्यात आला. तत्कालीन गृहमंत्री पी चिदंबरम यांनी पहिल्या प्रतिज्ञापत्रात स्पष्टता नसल्याने ते बदलण्याचा निर्णय घेण्यात आला असे म्हटले आहे. या अतिरेक्यांचा लष्करशी काही संबंध नव्हता असे काही वेगळे पुरावे गृहमंत्र्यांकडे होते, का या घटनेचे राजकारण करण्यासाठी हा निर्णय घेण्यात आला? पण हे नवीन प्रतिज्ञापत्र दाखल करण्यासाठी आपल्याला भाग पाडण्यात आल्याचे आरवीएस मणी यांनी सांगितले. यासाठी आपला पाठलाग केला गेला. आपल्याला ताब्यात घेऊन आपला छळ करण्यात आला. अंगाला सिगारेटचे चटके देण्यात आले आणि हे प्रतिज्ञापत्र दाखल करण्यास आपल्याला भाग पाडण्यात आले, या त्यांच्या विधानांनी आज देशभर खळबळ माजली आहे. गुजरात दंगलींतील सरकारच्या भूमिकेबद्दलचा तवा तापला असल्याने त्याचा फायदा घेऊन इशरत जहाँची चकमकही खोटी असून त्याचा गुजरात पोलिसांच्या हातून निःपक्षपाती तपास होऊ शकत नसल्याने सीबीआयच्या विशेष चौकशी पथकाकडून त्याची चौकशी केली जावी याबाबतची मानवाधिकार संस्थांची मागणी न्यायालयाने मंजूर केली. या चौकशी समितीत केंद्र सरकारने आपल्या पसंतीचे अधिकारी आणण्यासाठी पहिल्या अधिकाऱ्याची ईशान्य भारतात बदली केली, जेणेकरून त्याला तपासात भाग घेता येऊ नये. दुसऱ्या अधिकाऱ्याला नाव मागे घेण्यास भाग पाडण्यात आले. सीबीआय ही स्वायत्त तपास यंत्रणा आहे. गृहमंत्री सीबीआयने काय करावे याबाबत आदेश देऊ शकत नाहीत. पण सीबीआयची अवस्था पिंजऱ्यातील पोपटाप्रमाणे आहे हे असे विधान साक्षात सर्वोच्च न्यायालयाने केले होते. केंद्रात सत्तेवर असलेले सरकार सीबीआयचा वापर आपल्या राजकीय विरोधकांविरूद्ध कशाप्रकारे करते याबाबत खोलात शिरून लिहिण्याची आवश्यकता नाही. पण यावेळी आयबीच्या अधिकाऱ्यांचा तपास करण्यास सीबीआयला सांगण्यात आले. देशाच्या अंतर्गत सुरक्षेची जबाबदारी गुप्तहेर खात्याकडे असल्याने त्यांच्याकडून अनेक अशा गोष्टी केल्या जातात, ज्या कायद्याच्या किंवा मानवाधिकारांच्या चौकटीत पूर्णपणे बसतातच असे नाही. पण गुप्तहेर खात्यावर सरकारचे नियंत्रण असल्यास अशा गोष्टींबद्दल सार्वजनिक वाच्यता न करता, आवश्यकता पडल्यास, गुप्तहेर खात्याला अशा गोष्टी बिनबोभाट करण्यास केवळ भारतातच नाही तर जगभरात सर्वत्र अलिखित मान्यता असते. यात काही चूकभूल झाली तर त्याची अंतर्गत चौकशी केली जाते. पण आयबीच्या अधिकाऱ्यांना संशयित गुन्हेगार ठरवून त्यांची सीबीआयमार्फत चौकशी होणे म्हणजे एका प्रकारे देशाच्या अंतर्गत संरक्षण व्यवस्थेची चिरफाड करण्यासारखे आहे. दुर्दैवाने राजकीय फायद्यासाठी असे केले गेले. इशरत जहाँशी झालेल्या चकमकीत सहभागी असलेल्या गुजरात पोलिसांतील वरिष्ठ अधिकाऱ्यांना सीबीआयने अटक केली. पण ९० दिवसांत त्यांच्यावर आरोपपत्र दाखल करण्यात न आल्याने त्यांची जामिनावर सुटका करण्यात आली. मग त्यांना एकेकाला गाठून आम्हाला ही खोटी चकमक करण्यासाठी गृहमंत्री तसेच मुख्यमंत्र्यांकडून दबाव आला होता असे म्हणण्यास भाग पाडण्याचा प्रयत्न झाला. यासंबंधित बातम्यांचे गौप्यस्फोट स्वतःला धार्जिण्या वृत्तवाहिन्या तसेच पत्रकारांकडून वेळोवेळी करण्यात येऊन संशयाची सुई मोदी व अमित शहांवर रोखण्यात सरकारला यश आले. ही घटना म्हणजे एका प्रकारे आरोपीला (इशरतचा खोटी चकमक केल्याबद्दल) साक्षीदार (मोदी/शहांनी आपल्याला असे करायला सांगितले) म्हणून उभे करण्याचा भाग होता. आज या गौप्यस्फोटांमुळे वादळ उठले असतानाही ‘इशरत’चा एनकाउंटर खोटा होता हा एक मुद्दा अन्य सर्व मुद्यांपेक्षा – म्हणजे या अतिरेक्यांचा लष्कर-ए-तैय्यबाशी असलेला संबंध ते गृहमंत्र्यांनी राजकीय स्वार्थासाठी बदललेले प्रतिज्ञापत्र – मोठा असल्याचा हास्यास्पद दावा करण्यात येत आहे. प्रश्न फक्त मोदी आणि शहांचा किंवा भाजपचा नाहीये. राष्ट्रपती प्रणव मुखर्जी देशाचे अर्थमंत्री असताना त्यांच्या कार्यालयात चालणारी संभाषणं चोरून ऐकणारी यंत्रं (लिसनिंग डिवायसेस) सापडली होती. याचे वार्तांकन पहिल्यांदा ‘इंडियन एक्सप्रेस’ आणि ‘लोकसत्ता’नेच केले होते. तेव्हाही आरोप गृहमंत्रालय आणि पी चिदंबरम यांच्यावरच झाले होते. त्यानंतर या प्रकरणाचे काय झाले हे काही कळले नाही. यूपीए १ सरकार वाचवण्यासाठी “कॅश फॉर वोट” प्रकरणाची चौकशीही अशीच थंडावली आहे. तेव्हाही सरकारचे बहुमत टिकवण्यासाठी शेकडो कोटी रूपयांचा घोडेबाजार झाला होता. ट्रंका भरभरून नोटा पाहिल्याचे अमेरिकन राजनैतिक अधिकाऱ्याचे बयाण ‘विकीलिक्स’मधून बाहेर आले आहे. असो, चिदंबरम यांनी या सगळ्या गोष्टी स्वतःच्या बुद्धीने आणि इच्छेने केल्या का त्यांचा बोलविता धनी कोणतरी वेगळाच होता याची चौकशी राजकारण न करता झाली पाहिजे. या घटना आयबीचे मनोधैर्य खच्ची करणाऱ्या होत्या. इशरत आणि तिच्या साथीदारांचा एनकाउंटर झाला का नाही याबाबत न्यायालय योग्य तो निर्णय देईलच पण या प्रकरणात देशाच्या सुरक्षा यंत्रणांचा राजकीय स्वार्थासाठी एककाउंटर केला गेला, असे म्हणावयास जागा आहे - See more at: http://www.loksatta.com/desh-videsh-news/blog-by-anay-joglekar-on-ishrat-jahan-encounter-1211148/#sthash.wnYsiHYX.dpuf

He was not even an incoming blip on my radar. On 4 March, 2016, I don’t particularly want to know. Let him go back into anonymity. Do whatever he wishes to without his face being plastered all over the media. I am up to here with that overused set of pictures slamming into my life if I pick up a paper, switch on a TV, go to a website. Enough already! That’s the beauty of, the glory of India… You can come out of jail and badmouth the Prime Minister and rabble rouse hours later and go home for lunch to be garlanded as a crusader. Not even in America. By now the FBI and Homeland Security would have begun tracking you. Not even United Kingdom where MI5 and 6 and 7 would have opened a file on the guy. And we dare talk of freedom being in peril? Not only does he get to slag of the Indian Prime Minister but also now is the guide, mentor and philosopher to the nation. His words are golden and he reaps in mountains of publicity… The media cannot get enough of that scrunched up expression of zeal. Do we need this? An exhausting diet of shrill from a kid who should be in class? Now he can go round the country giving his fiery speeches, appear on talk shows, become rich, for doing absolutely nothing. He is not a celebrity or an icon or someone I particularly want my children or their children to emulate. That he has been thrust into a sort of absurd greatness and been given a major boost is more an exercise in media's morality (or lack of it) where hellions are made into heroes and nobodies are consecrated as symbols of the democratic endeavor. He leaves me stone cold. And the only reason I am prattling upon about it is in the hope that there will be enough folks out there who will say, yes, stop already, bahuth ho gaya. He did not change the world for the better. He did not find a cure for AIDS or cancer. He did not even save anyone from a stormy sea or a burning building, no act of even mini-heroism. He has not enhanced the arts, excelled in sport, made a breakthrough in science or engaged in any travail of value. Not even a commercial enterprise where he got people jobs and created an empire. Absolutely nothing of worth and yet he is the most famous face in the country. Good luck to him if he can exploit the system to his advantage but I don’t want to know anything more about his thoughts or his leanings or his opinion on anything. He is just not that important and it is time we stopped anointing him as some sort of a messiah. I am not interested in his philosophy or his leftist leanings or whether or not he has signed a pledge to be a good boy. I don’t want to see that face every morning. PTI He is just a student in a liberal university who has yet to start earning a living and paying his bills. A dependent. That his release on bail is being seen as some triumphant victory borders on the absurd and, frankly, I don’t even want to read about that or view it on TV. You want to dance in celebration, go ahead, so did the dervishes and the witches of Macbeth. Our modern media is often slagged off for ignoring a story and down playing it. If ever there was a report worthy of being downplayed (or not played at all) this is it. Send it back to oblivion and let’s get on with life. By that token I don’t give a damn whether he is poor or lives in a castle by the sea, what he ate for dinner or what his experiences in jail were. There are over 400,000 people in Indian jails and 68 percent of them are undertrials so really it is a no-brainer. I can almost visualize this poster child for the student power vote bank being lifted up on high and flung into the higher rungs of political power… More’s the pity. Believe me, somewhere here in this judgement is a kernel of the future of this JNU issue. It has not gone away and there will be another chapter. The grant of bail is merely a breather. Till the next round, the less profile Mr Kumar shows the better for him. No one is your friend, mate. They will use you and abuse you and walk away. Just be sure you do not do the same

It is not about nationalism but India’s national security February 20, 2016, 3:51 pm IST Ashali Varma in No Free Lunch After going through the endless debates and essays I find that nationalism has been discussed at length but India’s security has not come up for much debate. This what I worry about as we live in a dangerous neighbourhood and the enemy could be anywhere. It is easy to forget about the victims of 26/11 because Rajeev Sardesai and Pratap Bhanu Mehta and Umar Khalid were not gunned down by Kasab and his companions. They were not present either when Maoist killed 70 jawans. Nor have they ever spent months on the Siachen glacier protecting our country. Nor are they in any way related to the policemen and CRPF jawans who died fighting terrorists in the parliament attack. For that matter they are not even involved with protecting our borders where militants kill soldiers on a daily basis. So as an army brat, I wonder how they can dare to comment on nationalism. I just wonder how they would feel if death stalked them daily in the forests between Pakistan and India? Instead, they write long ponderous pieces declaring how wrong it is to book a youth on sedition. I wonder if they have heard of the Patriot Act in the US. Are they living in some cuckoo land even after 9/11 and 26/11? Do they not know that if you say anything like the following in America about the 9/11 terrorists you would be put away without much fuss—and no newspaper or TV channel would dare to say one thing in your favour much less write reams on how innocent the young men were. -‘Tum kitne Afzal maroge, ghar-ghar se Afzal niklenge’ – ‘Pakistan zindabad’ – ‘Kashmir maange azaadi, ladkar lenge azaadi’ – ‘Kashmir ki azaadi tak, jung rahegi-jung rahegi’ – ‘Bharat ki barbaadi tak, jung rahegi-jung rahegi’ – ‘Afzak ki hatya nahi sahenge’ I find the lines above very scary and extremely worrying for our security. It takes very little to turn one person into a terrorist. It does not even need brainwashing but just a belief that the state is wrong and should suffer the consequences. Go through Kasab’s interrogation, he did it for money! He did not even hate India. He did not study in a tony university rallying up people against India. He was just a very poor kid who got recruited by the LeT and once he got in he realized he could not get out. He knew too much. But the JNU rally above speaks volumes in the words chosen by so called innocent students merely against death penalty! When I heard it at the same time that I heard the only soldier who had been rescued in Siachen had died, it really made my blood boil. This is a visceral hate speech wanting to destroy this country, forget nationalism, talk security, such people are really a security risk and if you don’t think so just look at the Patriot Act. We need one just like that as America has two huge oceans protecting it while we have porous borders and the enemy is not just at the gate but within us. You mention the word terrorist or bomb or killing in an airport or campus in the US and see what happens to you. I think India is far too lenient and far too indulgent about our national security and that is because for years the police and army have been scared to take down terrorists in case it is called an encounter and they instead of the terrorists are put in jail! What lunacy, the Congress created! What an atmosphere of indulgence that has created monsters that have come back to haunt us again and again and yes only the little people get killed in the hundreds as the powerful have Z security. So Rahul Gandhi and Kejriwal can go to the students and encourage the hate speech but someone else is guarding their backs and that is a soldier or a policeman who is the first line of defense. No wonder arm chair journalists and petty politician can speak volumes on nationalism without ever having to be in the line of fire. No wonder I am getting hundreds of mails from the army and security establishments about the dangerous games such people are playing. Even Pakistan is playing it up to the hilt while they put a guy who flew an Indian flag to jail for ten years! Why are we always the first to shoot ourselves in the foot. Rajdeep Sardesai, if you had an inkling of what I have gone through and seen firsthand as a soldier’s daughter you would not talk so glibly about being an anti-national as if it was a badge of honour. No Sir medals are not won, pontificating to your friends and readers, medals are won when you are ready to give your life for your country. We have seen enough terrorism in India. If you have the guts and the mindset, mentor students in honour and sacrifice and not in worthless rallies that make martyrs of terrorists and want to destroy our blessed country. It is our national security at stake and not some mindless war cry that you think is just kids having fun
