honouring 36,250 policemen who have laid down their lives in defence of our nation’s internal and border security since Independence

The Police Memorial serves as more than just a symbol; it stands as a poignant tribute to the sacrifice and dedication of our police officers in nation-building. Notably, the current regime remains wholeheartedly dedicated to the welfare of our police personnel and their family members. Union Home Minister Shri Shah began his address by honouring 36,250 policemen who have laid down their lives in defence of our nation’s internal and border security since Independence. He emphasised that India is making strides in various domains on the world stage today and the bedrock of this progress is the sacrifice of these martyrs, a sacrifice that the nation will forever hold in high regard. These words were directed at the families of the martyred policemen, reminding them that the country’s gratitude for their sacrifices is firm. Turning our attention to the importance of a vigilant police force, it is indisputable that no country can ensure internal and border security without the presence of an efficient police system. Among all individuals serving the nation, policemen bear the most challenging responsibilities. Regardless of day or night, summer or winter, holidays or regular days — our police personnel do not have the luxury of celebrating festivals with their families. Moreover, they dedicate their prime years to safeguarding the nation’s security, often staying separated from their families. Their commitment involves demonstrating courage, valour and sacrifice for the sake of the country’s security and law and order. The duties of the police force encompass counter-terrorism efforts, crime prevention, crowd control, disaster and accident management, as well as serving citizens on the frontlines during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic. Our dedicated policemen have consistently proven their mettle on every occasion. Over the past year, from September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2023, as many as 188 policemen have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty to uphold the security and law and order of our nation. In his speech, Shri Shah also highlighted Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of achieving ‘Amrit Kaal’ —by propelling the nation to a preeminent position across all domains in the next 25 years when we celebrate the centenary of India’s Independence. To realise this goal, the 140 crore citizens of the country have collectively made resolutions and the amalgamation of these resolutions will undoubtedly propel us to the forefront on the global stage.n
