The attacks carried out by militants in summer capital and South Kashmir sparked panic. They came at a time when the State Government planned to revoke the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from parts of the State including summer capital Srinagar.
Only a day before, Army opposed the roll back of the AFSPA in a meeting with the Central team headed by the Cabinet Secretary Ajit Kumar Seth. Army was of the opinion that although the situation has improved in the State but the time was not ripe for the revocation of the AFSPA as militants can re-surface in these areas anytime.
However, police gave detailed account of the militancy related incidents that have taken place in the State during past six months and also shared militant numbers and movement with the Central team. They told the meeting that all district headquarters and major towns except Sopore, Pattan and Tral are militancy free.
