Bangladesh Army Chief Foils Yunus' Plans to Ignite Skirmishes with India
Faced with mounting domestic challenges, Mohammad Yunus, head of Bangladesh's interim government, conceived a dangerous scheme in early May to shift public attention from his administration's failures. His strategy involved engineering limited skirmishes along the Indo-Bangladesh border, aiming to unite the populace under a banner of nationalism and strengthen his grip on power by deflecting calls for early elections.
Strategic Calculations
Yunus believed that orchestrating a confrontation with India would distract citizens from escalating domestic issues. He anticipated that the ensuing nationalistic fervor would bolster his support, allowing him to maintain authority amid rising dissent. Sources indicate that he collaborated with the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh and leaders of the newly formed Jatiyo Nagorik Party to finalize this plan.
Military Consultation and Execution
Key to Yunus' strategy was the involvement of military officials, including National Security Advisor Khalilur Rahman and Army Quarter-Master General Lieutenant General Mohammad Faizur Rahman. This collaboration occurred around the time India initiated 'Operation Sindoor' against Pakistan. The plan involved leveraging the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) to provoke the Indian Border Security Force (BSF), with back-up support from army units.
Proposed Aggression Along the Border
With India preoccupied with Pakistan, Yunus and his associates believed they could exploit this distraction to instigate border tensions. The BGB was instructed to adopt an aggressive posture, potentially sparking confrontations with the BSF. Past incidents had already seen the BGB adopt a combative stance, objecting to Indian border constructions and even crossing into Indian territory.
Army Chief's Intervention
However, the scheme quickly came to the attention of Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman. After consulting senior military officials, he vehemently opposed Yunus' plan, warning that any escalation along the border would be reckless and could spiral out of control. He asserted that the BGB, as an auxiliary force, was under his command and that he would not tolerate any independent directives from the government.
Political Backlash and Consequences
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) also became aware of Yunus' intentions and expressed strong opposition, cautioning him against endangering national stability. Faced with significant resistance from both the military and political spheres, Yunus eventually abandoned his plans.
Underlying Motivations for the Plot
Yunus' scheme was a desperate attempt to divert attention from increasing domestic unrest, characterized by rising crime rates, inflation, and widespread dissatisfaction with his administration’s performance. Despite support from certain political factions, public sentiment remained largely critical. The army chief’s decisive intervention thwarted a potentially dangerous escalation, underscoring the delicate balance of power in Bangladesh.
By recognizing the grave implications of Yunus' strategy, General Waker-uz-Zaman has emerged as a crucial figure in maintaining national stability amid a turbulent political landscape.

The Economist's Recognition of Bangladesh as 'Country of the Year 2024': A Dangerous Move
The recent designation of Bangladesh as the ‘Country of
the Year 2024’ by The Economist is a highly questionable decision.
Given Bangladesh’s crumbling economy, fractured social fabric, and deeply
unstable political landscape, this recognition seems less about celebrating
genuine progress and more about endorsing a narrative that aligns with Western
geopolitical interests.
Misguided Recognition with Hidden Agendas
The UK-based magazine’s accolade, ostensibly meant to
highlight development and inspire optimism, instead perpetuates a dangerously
misleading narrative. The Economist justified its choice by citing a
regime change and the emergence of a "more liberal government."
However, this explanation ignores the troubling realities on the ground. The
ousting of Sheikh Hasina’s democratically elected government, replaced by
Muhammad Yunus's leadership, has plunged the nation into chaos. This
superficial celebration of change overlooks the risks posed by a flawed and
destabilizing political transition.
Economic Turmoil and Social Instability
Far from representing liberal development, Bangladesh’s
current state paints a grim picture of economic collapse and social unrest.
Forex reserves have dwindled, exports have plummeted, and inflation has surged.
Alarmingly, over a quarter of the population now faces extreme hunger. These
indicators point to a deteriorating economy that contradicts the rosy narrative
promoted by The Economist.
Escalating Violence Against Minorities
One of the most disturbing outcomes of the regime change has
been the spike in violence against minorities, particularly Hindus. Temples
have been attacked, incidents of forced conversions have increased, and the
persecution of minorities has reached alarming levels. Despite international
condemnation, including from Western blocs, these atrocities are downplayed in The
Economist’s assessment, revealing a troubling double standard in the
magazine’s narrative.
A Pattern of Misjudged Recognitions
This is not the first time The Economist has made a
controversial selection. In 2015, Myanmar was honored for its transition to
democracy, only for the world to later witness the Rohingya genocide.
Similarly, Ukraine was awarded in 2022 amid its conflict with Russia, raising
questions about the magazine’s selective focus. By naming Bangladesh Country
of the Year 2024, The Economist appears to prioritize geopolitical
narratives over authentic progress, reinforcing concerns about the magazine’s
credibility.
Implications for India
As Bangladesh’s closest neighbor, India bears the brunt of
its instability. A vulnerable Bangladesh could become a breeding ground for
extremism, cross-border terrorism, and illegal immigration, directly
threatening India’s security. Additionally, the rising persecution of
Bangladeshi Hindus exacerbates communal tensions within India, challenging its
internal harmony.
India’s proactive support during Bangladesh’s crises, such
as food security initiatives, underscores the interdependence of the two
nations. However, these efforts are often undermined by forces that thrive on
destabilization. The Economist’s recognition risks emboldening such
elements, jeopardizing regional stability.
Western Media's Double Standards
The hypocrisy of Western media outlets is evident in their
selective outrage. Issues such as sectarian violence, human rights violations,
and economic mismanagement in Bangladesh are downplayed, whereas similar
occurrences in Western countries would dominate headlines. For instance, the
plight of Bangladeshi Hindus is dismissed as an internal matter, while similar
issues elsewhere are treated as international crises. This bias devalues the
suffering of those affected and exposes ulterior motives behind such
narratives.
Lessons for South Asia
The unfolding events in Bangladesh serve as a cautionary
tale for the entire South Asian region. The West’s track record in
destabilizing nations—from Afghanistan to Iraq to Myanmar—should be a stark
warning. For India, the message is clear: a stable neighborhood is essential
for its security and development. India must continue supporting Bangladesh’s
people, advocating for inclusive development and the protection of minorities.
A Dangerous Precedent
By celebrating a regime change that has led to instability, The
Economist’s recognition diverts attention from Bangladesh’s real challenges
and legitimizes external interference. This sets a dangerous precedent for
other nations in the region, threatening their sovereignty and stability.
Conclusion: Prioritizing Narratives Over Realities
The timing of this recognition is particularly suspect,
given Bangladesh’s dire economic, social, and political conditions. Far from
celebrating genuine progress, this accolade appears to endorse a West-suited
narrative that undermines Bangladesh’s sovereignty and threatens regional
stability.
The Economist’s decision to name Bangladesh the ‘Country
of the Year’ is not just misguided; it is a reckless move that risks
exacerbating tensions in South Asia. The grim lessons from Bangladesh’s current
predicament must serve as a stark warning against prioritizing narratives over
realities

Bangladesh’s Descent into Islamist Violence Against Hindus
A Geopolitical Nightmare for India
An unstable Bangladesh, mired in radical Islamism and
political violence, has long been India’s geopolitical nightmare. Recent
developments have exacerbated this concern. In August, widespread protests and
a harsh government crackdown culminated in the military-backed ouster of Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina, who had veered toward authoritarianism. However,
instead of ushering in a democratic transition, the regime change has plunged
Bangladesh into deeper chaos. Human rights abuses, lawlessness, and the rise of
Islamist groups now threaten to turn the country into a new global flashpoint.
Sheikh Hasina: Balancing Authoritarianism and Stability
Sheikh Hasina, despite her authoritarian tendencies, had
been a stabilizing force in Bangladesh. Once a pro-democracy leader who helped
topple the military regime in 1990, Hasina later consolidated power as Prime
Minister but kept both the powerful military and Islamist movements in check.
Under her leadership, Bangladesh’s fragile stability was maintained.
In South Asia, military-backed regimes are notorious for
their heavy-handed suppression of dissent, while militaries with unfulfilled
ambitions often exploit unrest to seize power. In Bangladesh, the military
refused to enforce a lockdown amid widespread protests. Once Hasina was ousted,
it quickly installed an interim administration and ensured her departure to
India before she could formally resign.
A Military-Mullah Nexus in Power
The interim regime is nominally led by Nobel Peace Prize
laureate Muhammad Yunus, who rose to prominence with the support of a
student-led, Islamist-backed protest movement. However, the 84-year-old Yunus
serves merely as the civilian face of what is effectively a military-Islamist
alliance. Despite lacking constitutional legitimacy, the interim administration
has offered no timeline for national elections, deepening political
uncertainty.
Curtailing Freedoms and Suppressing Dissent
Under the interim regime, press freedom and civil liberties
have been severely curtailed. Journalists face systematic harassment, with 167
press credentials revoked without explanation and 129 journalists charged with
fabricated cases of murder, abduction, or assault. Scholars, lawyers, and
critics of the regime have also faced legal persecution. In October alone, more
than 7,000 individuals were arrested, and political detainees have reported
physical assaults while in custody.
The regime’s crackdown has extended to minority communities
as well. Late last month, a Hindu monk was arrested on sedition charges after
leading peaceful protests demanding protections for Bangladesh’s Hindu
minority. This is part of a larger trend of targeted violence. Hindu
communities, along with Buddhists, Christians, indigenous groups, and Islamic
sects deemed heretical, have been subjected to attacks by jihadi mobs. At one
anti-Hindu protest, Islamist marchers openly chanted, “Catch them and slaughter
them.”
The Islamist Resurgence
The rise in Islamist violence is a direct consequence of the
interim regime’s policies. It has lifted bans on jihadi groups with known links
to terrorism and released radical Islamist leaders, including one convicted for
murdering a secular blogger. The regime has also signaled plans to remove
secularism from the country’s constitution, further emboldening extremist
forces. In some instances, Islamists have enforced their radical ideology by
targeting women for “immodest” attire, showcasing their intent to impose a
rigid moral code on society.
Implications for India and the United States
An unstable Bangladesh, overrun by radical Islamism and
political violence, poses a serious threat to India’s security. Beyond India,
the United States must recognize that the current trajectory in Bangladesh is
also detrimental to its own strategic interests. Washington’s pressure on the
interim regime to restore stability, protect minorities, and uphold democratic
principles could help address the crisis. Such a shift would not only
strengthen regional security but also contribute to mending America’s strained
relationship with India.
A Call for Urgent Action
The developments in Bangladesh are a cause for global
concern. The international community, particularly the United States, must act
swiftly to prevent Bangladesh from becoming a hotbed of Islamist extremism and
political instability. For India, the stakes are especially high, as a
destabilized neighbor threatens regional peace and security. Urgent
intervention is necessary to safeguard Bangladesh’s secular foundations and
ensure a path toward stability and democracy.

How India is protesting against Hindu attacks in Bangladesh
No Tourists, No Hospital Services: India’s Protests Against Hindu Attacks in Bangladesh
India-Bangladesh relations are witnessing a
sharp decline as reports of attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh continue to
surface. In response, several sectors in India have taken measures to express
their dissatisfaction, including a boycott of Bangladeshi tourists and
patients. Additionally, flights and trade between the two countries have been
significantly disrupted.
Deteriorating Diplomatic Ties
India and Bangladesh, once considered friendly
neighbors, now face strained relations. The situation escalated following the
ousting of Sheikh Hasina as Bangladesh’s leader through a popular student
uprising. Her departure, followed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus’ interim
government’s alleged inaction to protect minorities, has added to the tension.
New Delhi has voiced concerns over the safety of minorities in Bangladesh,
particularly after the arrest of former ISKCON monk Chinmoy Krishna Das.
Trade Relations Take a Hit
Trade, a cornerstone of India-Bangladesh
relations, is also under strain. Bangladesh, India’s largest trading partner in
South Asia, faces mounting trade suspensions:
- Sutarkandi Land Port Shutdown: The
Exporters & Importers Association in Assam’s Sribhumi district
announced the suspension of trade through the Sutarkandi land port,
halting exports of essential goods like stone, rice, coal, and fresh
fruits.
- Export Embargo: West
Bengal’s BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari called for an indefinite export
embargo, warning of stricter restrictions unless Bangladesh’s interim
government addresses attacks on Hindus.
- Protests and Burnings:
Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha led a protest burning Bangladeshi
goods and personally blocked trade routes.
These actions have disrupted cross-border
trade, significantly impacting the economic exchange between the two nations.
Decline in Flights and Cross-Border Transport
The unrest has also impacted transportation
links:
- Reduced Flights: The
number of flights between Bangladesh and India has sharply declined. In
July, 205 flights carried over 42,000 passengers between Kolkata and
Bangladesh. By November, this number had halved to just 96 flights, with
fewer than 23,000 passengers.
- Truck Traffic Slumps:
Cross-border truck movement has also diminished. For instance, daily truck
entries through the Ghojadanga land port in Basirhat have halved from 400
to about 200.
Bangladeshi
Tourists Face Boycotts
Indian tourism operators have taken a firm
stance against Bangladeshi tourists:
- Hotel Ban: The
All-Tripura Hotel and Restaurant Owners’ Association announced that
Bangladeshi tourists will not be provided accommodations or meals.
- Mission Breach Incident: Over
50 protesters entered the Bangladeshi mission premises in Agartala,
escalating tensions and prompting police action, including suspensions and
detentions.
- Decline in Tourist Numbers:
Political unrest has led to a sharp drop in Bangladeshi tourists visiting
India, decreasing from 2.12 million in 2023 to 1.29 million as of August
2024.
Medical
Services Boycott
Indian hospitals have also joined the
protests:
- North Kolkata Hospital Ban: The
Jitendra Narayan Ray Hospital in Manicktala declared it would no longer
treat Bangladeshi nationals.
- Tripura Hospital Stance: ILS
Hospitals in Agartala echoed similar sentiments, citing the mistreatment
of Hindus in Bangladesh.
This decision could significantly impact
medical tourism between the two nations. In 2023, over 300,000 Bangladeshi
medical tourists sought treatment in India, a figure that has already seen a
decline amidst the ongoing tensions.
Statements from Bangladesh’s Leadership
Bangladesh’s interim government has
acknowledged the changing dynamics of its relationship with India. Nobel
laureate and interim leader Muhammad Yunus stated in a New York Times interview
that India’s portrayal of Bangladesh as becoming “like Afghanistan” has further
strained ties. He warned that destabilizing Bangladesh would have ripple
effects across the region.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain also
recognized the shift, calling for a pragmatic approach to rebuilding ties in
the new geopolitical reality.
Navigating
the Future
The escalating tensions between India and
Bangladesh have far-reaching implications for the region’s political and
economic stability. It is imperative for both nations to address their
differences and restore their historically strong ties to ensure peace and
mutual prosperity.

Instability in India’s Neighborhood: A Growing Concern
The potential for Western forces to
destabilize India’s neighborhood, seeking opportunities to disrupt India’s
growth story, is a matter of grave concern. Recent events in Bangladesh
exemplify this risk and highlight the consequences of external interference.
The
Protests Against Sheikh Hasina: Organic or Engineered?
When mass protests erupted against Sheikh
Hasina’s 15-year tenure as Prime Minister of Bangladesh, they initially
appeared to be organic. These protests had all the hallmarks of a large-scale
public dissent: participation of student groups, political opposition leaders
driving the narrative, public grievances over government policies such as
reservation quotas, and substantial financial support sustaining the movement.
Historically, such a combination often leads
to significant unrest, with police or military intervention escalating the
situation into violence. This, in turn, fuels further protests in a vicious
cycle capable of toppling governments. However, questions arose about the
source of the substantial financial resources fueling these protests, revealing
a troubling connection.
The Deep
State Connection
A trail of monetary transactions pointed
towards involvement by the Western deep state. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
herself, shortly after seeking refuge in India, suggested that the protests
were hijacked by the United States’ deep state, allegedly aiming to secure a
naval base in the Bay of Bengal. This theory gained further credence with the
appointment of Muhammad Yunus as Chief Advisor to the Bangladesh government—a
figure seemingly groomed for this role.
Sheikh Hasina remains the democratically
elected Prime Minister of Bangladesh, whereas Yunus is a leader imposed by
external forces. His appointment marks a significant deviation from democratic
norms, leading to severe consequences for the nation.
The Decline
of Democracy and Rising Atrocities
Under Yunus’ regime, Bangladesh has witnessed
the systematic erosion of its democratic fabric. State-sponsored violence
against Hindus and other minorities has intensified, undermining the country’s
secular ethos. Bangladesh, once a melting pot of diverse religious communities,
is rapidly being transformed into an Islamic state through targeted pogroms.
Houses of Hindus and other minorities are
raided, individuals attacked and killed, properties stolen, and places of
worship desecrated. The regime’s actions have made it clear that Bangladesh is
no longer a functioning democracy. Western powers, meanwhile, appear
indifferent to these atrocities, further complicating the situation.
India’s
Role and the Way Forward
India has historically opted for strategic
patience in its neighborhood. As Pakistan nears collapse, India is prepared to
wait out Bangladesh’s current turmoil as well. The Citizenship (Amendment) Act
(CAA) already provides a safety net for persecuted minorities, reaffirming
India’s position as a bastion of religious freedom and democracy.
Public sentiment in Bangladesh may eventually
shift, mirroring trends in Balochistan and Gilgit, where appreciation for
India’s economic and democratic success is growing. However, India must remain
vigilant against attempts by Western forces to exploit instability in its
neighborhood for their gain.
Lessons for
the Western World
The West must confront its hypocrisy and
acknowledge the inhumane atrocities being perpetrated under Yunus’ regime.
These state-sponsored acts of terror demand a decisive and immediate response.
While regime-change operations may have succeeded in Ukraine, Syria, Iraq,
Afghanistan, and now Bangladesh, India’s robust democratic institutions and
vigilant electorate make it impervious to such tactics.
The Western world’s selective disregard for
human rights and democratic principles in South Asia serves as a stark reminder
of the dangers of external interference. It is imperative for the international
community to uphold justice and democratic integrity, not only for the sake of
Bangladesh but for regional stability as a whole.
