A young captain sent me this - looks to be correct. I have a lot of respect for the defence forces and felt this needs to be sent to all who will understand.
This has reference to the appointment of Sachin Tendulkar in the rank of Group Caption of the Indian Air Force. A disturbed citizen has vented his feelings on this.
1. Ranks in the Armed Forces, regardless of seniority (offr/non-com)
are NOT appointments to QANGOs that he can distribute even to eminent
citizens. This applies more stringently to selection grade ones. Refer
the appointment of ST( Sachin) to honorary Gp Capt. Read a superb aside to a/m
idiocy; about this later...
2. Fighter aircraft of the IAF are NOT the aviation equivalent of
Formula 1 cars that any Tom, Dick, Harry, ST or MSD expresses a
"desire" to fly in one (and more incredibly and absurdly) his desire
is to be taken seriously. They are extremely expensive MILITARY
hardware, bought from OUR taxes (including those in ACM Naik's Form
16) and serve a purpose substantially higher than for earning brownie
points with the topi/dhoti/desk/batwallas.
3. The air wing of the Indian Armed Forces is NOT to the personal
fiefdom (jagir) of any Air Chief that it can be pimped for frivolous
attempts at IMC (Integrated Marketing Comn) for the IAF's recruitment
campaign or (more likely) helping in the realisation of the
incumbent's gubernatorial ambitions. A youngster of either gender has
complete freedom to elicit info about the wing from available media
and evaluate the pros and cons of signing up, pretty much the same way
as we here did.
4. There are infinitely more productive ways to recognize and reward
civilian sporting excellence - invite the person(s) to Command
sporting events, motivate them to spend time with award winners and
their families esp those of the posthumous gallants, facilitate
interaction with veterans - the list is endless.
5. Lastly, if the IAS puts down the Armed Forces in every possible
way including the Pay Commissions, you have only yourself to blame
- the IAS has your number. Has a Defence Secretary ever done something
as profoundly sycophantic as "honouring" a sports celebrity with HIS
ORGANISATION'S INVOLVEMENT? No, he is far too sensible for that...
