Dear Mr Raj Chengappa,

A few years ago we read that you had taken over as the Editor-in-chief of The Tribune. We were told that you were the son of an army officer, born in Ferozepur(?) where your father was then posted. The Tribune Trust was very happy that you had the twin qualifications of a military cum Punjabi background. I was particularly happy that my favourite newspaper since 1940 was in very good hands.

Then I read the news of a selective meeting that the Hon'ble Prime Minister held with five editors, you were one of them. It did not quite bother me in the beginning. However, I started noticing a certain pro establishment drift in the contents of The Tribune. Methought the sarkar had bought out a fauji son. Now you have come out with your 'analysis' on the subject of the age controversy of Gen VK Singh. It is nothing but a shameless one sided sarkari version of the row. You would have done well not to wade into the subject at all, just confining yourself to honest reporting covering views of both the sides. This could have been followed by an objective and honest editorial. Unfortunately, you fell into the sarkari trap and came out with what you did. Honestly speaking, hoesty - like common sense - is very uncommon today. You may have prepared your way towards a Rajya Sabha seat and an award, but that is not end all and be all in life. Surely, you are answerable to your conscince, unless it has been killed. 'Satyamev Jayate' may be a cliche for some but it is a true saying. Now it has come out in a TV panel discussion that the Rt Hon'ble Prime Minister authorised you to go ahead with the publication of that one sided so called analysis. I'm copying this mail to all the ESMs I know. Let them see what a fauji son is upto.
