Tragic Loss in Anti-Terror Operation
In a significant counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district, a junior commissioned officer (JCO), Naib Subedar Rakesh Kumar of 2 Para (Special Forces), was killed in action on Sunday. The encounter, which began as part of an ongoing operation against terrorists, also left three other soldiers injured. The operation was launched on Saturday in the remote Bhart Ridge area of Kishtwar, following the recent killing of two Village Defence Guards (VDGs) by militants.
Operation Details and Initial Engagement
The joint operation was conducted by the Indian Army and local police forces after receiving specific intelligence inputs about terrorist movements. The encounter began around 11 AM in the dense forests of Keshwan, near the site where the bodies of VDG members Nazir Ahmad and Kuldeep Kumar were found with gunshot wounds earlier in the week. The terrorists had reportedly abducted and murdered the VDGs, prompting an extensive search operation in the Kuntwara and Keshwan forests since Thursday evening.

The Army's White Knight Corps, responsible for security in the Jammu region, expressed their condolences on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). In their post, they saluted the supreme sacrifice of Nb Sub Rakesh Kumar and reiterated their commitment to supporting his bereaved family. The statement read:

Escalation of Conflict
The operation intensified after security forces made contact with the terrorists, leading to a fierce gunfight. According to officials, approximately three to four terrorists were surrounded during the encounter. The initial exchange of fire resulted in injuries to four Army personnel, who were promptly evacuated to a nearby hospital. Of these, three soldiers were reported to be in critical condition. A police spokesperson confirmed that efforts were ongoing to neutralize the terrorists responsible for the brutal killing of the VDGs.
Sporadic Gunfire Continues
As of the latest reports, sporadic gunfire was still being exchanged between the security forces and the terrorists holed up in the forested area. The operation aims to eliminate the threat posed by this group of militants and restore peace in the region. Security forces remain on high alert, with reinforcements deployed to contain the situation.
This encounter highlights the continuous challenges faced by security personnel in maintaining peace and order in Jammu and Kashmir, where militant activities have seen a resurgence in some areas.
