Trump's Escalating Stance Against Houthi Rebels

President Donald Trump has declared a policy of "complete annihilation" against Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels, coupled with a direct warning to Iran regarding its continued arms supply to the group. This aggressive stance coincides with an ongoing US military campaign aimed at dismantling the Houthi threat.

Direct Warning to Iran and Demand for Supply Cessation

Trump, utilizing his Truth Social platform, issued a stark directive to Iran: "Iran must stop the sending of these Supplies IMMEDIATELY. Let the Houthis fight it out themselves. Either way they lose, but this way they lose quickly." This statement underscores the administration's determination to cut off the Houthis' external support network.

Rationale Behind the Intensified Airstrike Campaign

The recent surge in US airstrikes targeting the Houthis is a direct response to the group's sustained attacks on international shipping. From November 2023 to January of the current year, the Houthis launched missile and drone strikes against over 100 merchant vessels, resulting in the sinking of two ships and the deaths of four sailors. The Houthis framed these attacks as a means to pressure Israel to end its conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Additionally, these actions elevated the Houthis' regional profile, mitigating public condemnation of their internal human rights abuses and suppression of dissent and aid efforts.

Justification for the Use of "Overwhelming Lethal Force"

Trump characterized the Houthi actions as an "unrelenting campaign of piracy, violence and terrorism." He emphasized the severe disruption caused by their attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, vital shipping lanes connecting Asia and Europe via the Suez Canal. In response, Trump asserted, "We will use overwhelming lethal force until we have achieved our objective," signaling a commitment to a decisive and forceful campaign to eliminate the Houthi threat
