Remembering Maj Gopi Singh Rathore , Shaurya Chakra (P) from 16 Garhwal Rifles/ 14 Rashtriya Rifles on his Balidan Diwas today.

As Lt Gen Satish Dua Sir mentions in his book India's Bravehearts, Maj Gopi was a charming, bright soldier who had a special love for words and was fondly known as 'Eagle' in his Battalion. He had been awarded a Gold Medal in his course at the IMA and on the other hand, he had a book of poems titled - 'Aaj se Pehle' as well as a collection of short stories titled- 'Aur Kya Chahiye' published in his name.

He had served as an ADC to two Presidents namely Shri K.R. Narayanan as well as Dr A P J Abdul Kalam. After five years of his service as ADC, he volunteered to serve in Kashmir and got posted to 14 Rashtriya Rifles.

On this day, in 2005, Maj Gopi made Sarvoch Balidan while leading an operation to flush out terrorists holed up in a building. Before he succumbed to his injuries, he had killed one terrorist in a close combat situation. He was decorated with a Shaurya Chakra posthumously.

He was not just a fearless soldier, but also a compassionate human being who made additional efforts to understand the problems of Kashmiri people and was always ready to help them.

As a mark of respect to him, upon his death, a bandh was declared in Bandipora for a day.

Every year, in his honour, Maj Gopi Singh Rathore Shaurya Chakra (P) Memorial Football Tournament is held in Bandipora every year, in his honour.

A short life of 34 years but a lasting impact on the lives that he touched. Humble tributes to this Real Hero.
