OPERATIONAL FREDOM FOR THE ARMY-WHAT IT MEANS

I'm reproducing below, an interesting and extremely logical post from Brig Kuldip Chhokar on a Veteran Group. I invariably find the Brigadier's views very balanced, logical and sans undue emotion. On the group post, I seek his posts out to be read first. Hereunder too, these resonate my and I'm sure d majority Fauji at least doubts. Read on. Regards. RPC

Friends, I have some very basic doubts. What does this giving a free hand to the Army mean, or imply. Getting down to the nuts and bolts, does it mean that security forces can now open fire at pelters, or at people damaging and burning public property? Does it mean that that they can fire at vehicles breaking through check barriers?  Does it mean security forces can search suspicious vehicles and person's with impunity? Does it mean that AFSPA will be enforced in letter and spirit, with no judicial intervention. At another plane does a free hand mean that security forces can attack and destroy enemy posts causing damage to our assets? Can they infiltrate and destroy hostile enemy and terrorist bases across the LOC without looking back. Can they launch surgical strikes without giving them a political colour. Friends, I ask these questions to be assured that the Army is being given a free hand to handle the twin menace of terrorism in the valley, and Pakistani aggression at the LOC, and around it. I say this because dealing with these problems requires decisive military action. The terrorists and Pakistan need to convinced through strong action that the Indian Army and the nation means business. Only then will giving a "Free Hand " have any meaning. Otherwise it is just another jhumla to portray ourselves as muscular when we are actually leaking in your pants. But I may be wrong in asking all these questions. Kuldip
